Dr. Marina Kurian, Bariatric Surgery

Marina Kurian, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Medical Director Program for Surgical Weight Loss, NYU School of Medicine, has dedicated a significant part of her professional life to the treatment of obesity and making surgery less painful with minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Kurian is a New York City native and graduated from Stuyvesant High School. She was accepted into a combined six year college/medical school program at Albany Medical College. She completed her surgical training at Albany Medical Center where she began to develop her interest in obesity management.

After completing her residency, Dr. Kurian finished an advanced laparascopic fellowship at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Starting with her time at Mount Sinai, Dr. Kurian has educated other surgeons in New York City and throughout the country in minimally invasive surgical techniques, and continues to be involved in surgeon education. In her practice, she offers numerous alternatives for morbidly obese individuals. These include minimally invasive gastric bypass, LAP-BANDŽ Adjustable Gastric Band, and revisional procedures. Dr. Kurian has performed more than 1700 weight loss procedures since starting her practice in New York in 2000. She was instrumental in starting the Minimally Invasive weight loss surgery program at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Kurian moved her practice to NYU in June 2007, continuing to provide compassionate and expert surgical care.

Dr. Kurian has presented articles and given talks throughout the world. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). She is also a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Association of Women Surgeons. She has numerous publications and book chapters in the laparoscopic literature. Dr. Kurian has numerous appearances on television, including Dateline and the Today Show.
