What is the New You™ Program?
New You™ is a medically supervised weight management program. Depending on the plan you choose to undertake, it utilizes 3-5 meal replacements per day, along with one meal consisting of "real food." Each meal replacement is comprised of 27 grams of whey protein and 10 grams of carbohydrates. The daily meal will include 300-600 calories (depending on gender and weight) of "real food" (lean protein and flavorful, yet filling vegetables).
The essence of the program is to learn how to keep hunger away by using behavioral tools and low glycemic - high protein foods at every meal. Deprivation is not one of the long term success habits! The principles of New You are medical safety while being in a state of mild ketosis initially, followed by developing "comfort proteins", behavioral insight and the knowledge of how to deal with trigger situations. Dr. Lofton's goal is to help each patient to develop his or her unique eating life style which promotes sound cardiovascular, behavioral and nutritional health.
As part of the program you will be required to meet with Dr. Lofton or our skilled registered dieticians biweekly to be medically monitored and provided with nutritional and behavioral support.
Groups designed to maximize your potential, help you make lifestyle changes and reiterate nutritional aspects of weight loss are also available to all New You members.
New You™ is not simply a weight loss program. As a Board Certified Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine physician, Dr. Lofton strongly recommends long-term follow up to maintain weight loss, monitor obesity related comorbidities, and to deal with expected deviations from a maintenance program.

Ketosis occurs when all of your carbohydrate stores are exhausted and fat, in the form of ketones, is used as the main energy source for your body.
Is Ketosis Safe?
Yes. Many recent clinical studies have shown the safety and efficacy of ketogenic (low carbohydrate and high protein) diets. Ketosis is a natural physical state for your body. Humans have evolved over time to efficiently store fat as energy for later use. The opposite is also true: we have evolved to efficiently use our fat stores in times of famine. When this occurs, we enter a state of ketosis. Also, everyone's body starts to produce ketones whenever food is not consumed for a few hours. In particular, this occurs overnight while sleeping or after exercising.
When your body is in ketosis, it is still fueling your body with the energy it needs. Ketones suppress appetite naturally such that you should not feel significant hunger. During the first week on the diet, your body will be consuming all of its carbohydrate reserves. During this time, you may experience some slight hunger, but rest assured this will pass. It does not take much to reduce or reverse ketosis. For example, if you consume a can of sugared soda or a piece of cake, etc., your ketosis will be affected and it may take up to a week to reestablish it. In some cases, consuming extra carbohydrates can cause an uncomfortable "carb crave." This could lead to regain of some or all of your lost weight. This is why it is critical that you adhere to the diet. If you are having difficulty sticking to the diet as prescribed, we are here to help you.
Some people may experience minor side effects while in ketosis: dizziness, fatigue, muscle cramps are the most common especially if you are not drinking enough water. Some people may also experience a decrease in energy when starting the diet as their body switches over from a carbohydrate burning to fat burning engine. This usually subsides after the first week and you have literally a burst of energy. If it does not, please contact us.
While on the program, women can expect to lose an average of two - five pounds per week. Men may lose more rapidly. Please note that this is an average and will depend on each individual. Following an exercise program while on the diet will speed up the weight loss rate. Also if you are unable to follow the diet as directed, it will be a low calorie meal plan but not a ketotic meal plan and weight loss will be less.
Although you can still expect to lose weight while on the diet without exercise, the rate of weight loss may increase with regular exercise. It is also important to begin an exercise program during weight loss to provide a basis for weight maintenance. We recommend that you exercise 240-300 minutes per week while on the program and as part of your weight maintenance. One of the most important behaviors for weight maintenance is following an exercise regimen. Ceasing to exercise is one of the top causes for weight regain.
No. The New Direction Beverage contains all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients you need to thrive. Women may continue to take calcium supplements. We do recommend that you take Omega-3 in the form of fish oil capsules during the diet and continuously.
High protein (26-7 grams of protein and 10 grams of carbohydrates/meal). There are small amounts of soy isolates in the puddings and soups but none in the shakes. There are over twenty items to choose from: soups, shakes, puddings and bars. The sodium and potassium content of the products is designed to maintain metabolic balance. It is important to drink 2-4 quarts of water (or a selection of non-caloric beverages) each day. And yes! You can have your coffee!! (In moderation)
