Which Surgery Option Should You Choose?

NYU weight loss surgeons perform three types of bariatric surgery:

  1. Adjustable Lap Band
  2. Gastric Bypass
  3. Biliopancreatic Diversion

There is no "right" method of weight-loss surgery. Each operation has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, although they lead to many of the same side effects , due to the physiology of weight loss.

Several factors will be considered in determining which operation is best for you, including your body mass index (BMI) and your eating habits. These and other issues will be discussed when you meet with your surgeon.

At NYU, the majority of these surgeries are performed with a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopy. In this approach, long slender operating instruments are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Because the incisions are so small, the laparoscopic approach leads to less postoperative discomfort and faster recoveries, compared to traditional "open" surgery.
