What do I do if I want to get pregnant?
Little is known about pregnancy after weight-loss surgery. Due to potential vitamin B and folate deficiency after gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and BPD/DS surgery, we suggest that you wait for at least 18 months after surgery to have a child. On the other hand, if you have a Lap-Band, you do not have the same nutritional risks, and can safely get pregnant within 6 months after surgery. You may however need to have your band loosened, so you should make your surgeon aware. After delivery, the band can be tightened accordingly.
Regardless of what surgery you have, make sure that your obstetrician is aware of that you've had weight-loss surgery. You should also come in and see us when and if you become pregnant. You and your baby should be followed closely.
