When will I be able to return to work or to exercise?
It depends in part which surgical approach you had and what operation you had. Laparoscopic techniques allow you to return to daily activities much faster than standard "open" techniques. With the former, you'll heal faster and with less pain. The laparoscopic approach also has a lower risk for the development of hernias.
We encourage you to be active as soon as you feel ready. This can be as early as one day after surgery, in the form of walking. Some people have returned to work the day after surgery. However, most patients find that they need 1 - 2 weeks of rest and recovery. You may feel tired during the first week, but you will feel more energetic as you lose weight.
We recommend that you return to full exercise at 6 weeks after surgery. Any significant exertion prior to that may prevent you from fully healing.
