Which Should You Choose?

NYU weight loss surgeons perform four types of bariatric surgery:

There is no "right" method of weight-loss surgery. Each operation has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.  Several factors will be considered in determining which operation is best for you, including your body mass index (BMI), your co-existing medical problems and your eating habits. These and other issues will be discussed when you meet with your surgeon.

At NYU, the majority of these surgeries are performed with a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopy. In this approach, long slender operating instruments are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Because the incisions are so small, the laparoscopic approach leads to less postoperative discomfort and faster recoveries, compared to traditional "open" surgery which utilize a large incision.
