Christine Ren, MD, FRCS

Christine Ren, Associate Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine, is considered by many to be the leading Lap-Band Surgeon in the U.S. She has performed over 1400 gastric band procedures.
Dr. Ren obtained her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass., followed by a residency in surgery at NYU Medical Center. Dr. Ren went on to complete a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, where she was involved as faculty in the minimally invasive bariatric surgery workshops to train surgeons in laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

A board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Ren was involved in refining the technical details leading to the first biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) and the first BPD with a duodenal switch (DS). She has also pursued research in vascular medicine, angiogenesis, and laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

Dr. Ren is the chairman of the insurance committee of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery with whom she has spearheaded the creation of 11 new CPT codes for bariatric surgery. This has enabled insurance companies to cover these operations, which previously, denied millions of Americans insurance coverage for these life-saving operations.

In July 2006 Dr. Christine Ren was nominated to the Executive Council of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as Councilman-at-Large.

Dr. Ren is recognized nationally and internationally for her contributions to the field of bariatric surgery. She is the recipient of a 2003 YWCA Woman's Achievement Award, has appeared on "Oprah," and was profiled in Crain's 2005 special issue on New York's Rising Stars.
